What is Control Measure in Cricket?

Control Measure in cricket is a term which is used to analyze a player performance.

Control Measure for Batsman in Cricket:

For a batsman, Control Measure indicates the percentage of balls that he had played with total control. For example, if a batsman wants to play the ball to leg side, but the ball takes an edge of the bat or is not middles properly and goes to a different direction. So this counts as not in control of the batsman. The control measure shows the percentage of the balls he played in full control i.e. Ball went wherever he wanted to play.

If a batsman misses two out of ten deliveries that means that he has a control measure of 80%.

Let me explain with an example, let's take Yuvraj Singh 6 sixes as an example.

What is Control Measure in cricket

Yuvraj Singh faced 6 deliveries off Stuart Broad and hit the ball wherever he wants to hit without leaving a ball. So, the control % or control measure of Yuvraj Singh is 100%.

Control Measure for Bowling in Cricket:

But for a bowlers it's opposite, if the batsman misses his deliveries that means that they are not in control of his bowling.

To understand this, let's consider Stuart Binny's 6 Wicket innings.

What is Control Measure in cricket

Stuart Binny bowled 4.4 overs means 20 deliveries, the batsman hit the ball and scored only in two deliveries out of 20 deliveries he faced. So the control measure or control % of the bowler is 10%.

How Control Percentage is calculated in cricket?

Control Measure or Control Percentage for a batsman is measured by the ratio of number of deliveries faced by batsman with control (properly middles the ball by the batsman) to the number of deliveries faced by batsman multiplied by 100, whereas for a bowler, it is defined as the ratio of number of deliveries faced by batsman without control (leading edge or not middles the ball properly by the batsman) to the total number of deliveries bowled by bowler multiplied by 100.

Whenever the control measure is high for a batsman, meaning he is in good control.

Whereas, whenever the control measure is low for a bowler, meaning he is in good control.
